What does hip hop mogul Jay Z have to do with internet marketing? Nothing, I bet that’s what you are thinking and you would be wrong. What Jay Z has done is that he reminded me of the mindset of so many internet marketers and offline companies. Even some of the seasoned internet marketers are falling victim to this and the rate is alarming. The trend in online marketing and promotion has been shifting more and more to social media. Social media is a way of marketing and broadcasting your content,product,or service to potential clients and associates using two way communication. Hence the word social.
Music has always been a way of expressing yourself and relating to different audiences. Country music relates to certain demographics, rock to its demo and rap or hip hop has it’s demographics. The same can be said for your marketing message. Each marketing and advertising message should have a target that it is trying to reach. Without it you are just wasting space and time. This reminds me of what Jay Z is telling us in the song “On To The Next One.”
On to the next one is a term that can be used when companies use a specific marketing method and it does not work as they anticipated. The next logical decision in a companies marketing methods are usually to stop doing what they are doing when it proves to be ineffective and to try something else. There are many businesses that will only do what everyone else does in their promotional methods such as taking out an ad in the local newspaper, buying an ad for the yellow pages,maybe throwing in their hat with a tv ad. Of course we all know that when you use any of those before mentioned methods that once the content is out there it can not be changed. Now this brings you to a problem if you need to change any thing about the contact information or anything at all. It becomes like words, once you say it you can not take it back. The same goes for more traditional methods of advertising and marketing.
Now that the information is out there you must determine if it is performing up to par or not. Once this decision is made and you conclude that it is not worth the investment, you have now concluded that it is time to move “On To The Next One.”. In your quest for local search marketing dominance and building your overall internet presence it is imperative that before you move on to the next one that you know why the previous one did not work.
There are several reasons why a marketing campaign may not work as well as you planned. Perhaps it could be the headline. Remember headlines are what people see first and it could make or break an advertising campaign. You may have the answer to the world’s health problem, but if no one reads past your headlines then you are doomed.
Your keyword phrase may be too broad and therefore it is getting lost in the crowd.It is a problem that offline small businesses have and yet continue to struggle with because they have not found a solution to their inadequacies locally.
